The degradation of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) is achieved through aerobic bacteria. The bacteria utilize oxygen as an electron receptor for energy in order to convert the organic material to carbon dioxide (CO2). Through this process they multiply, which in turn creates more beneficial bacteria to break down more BOD. As the water flows through the system, many changes will occur.
